Introduction

Trials de las Nalgas is a third-person story focused puzzle platformer, developed in Unity by Team Spectacle. The game uses ominous tones to shroud an immature and ridiculous objective that is only expressed in languages other than English.

When designing Trials de las Nalgas I had two goals in mind. First, I didn't want the game to take itself too seriously. My team of 5, including myself, were brand new to game development and this was the first game any of us had worked on. With that in mind, I wanted my team to feel free to experiment and grow with this project; and I didn't want them to feel like they needed to make the game perfectly. If anything, I wanted the imperfections and oddities that come from an inexperienced team to add to the ridiculous nature of the game.

My second goal was focused on making the scale of the game feasible for our fresh team. To reduce the work load a bit, I designed the game so that it could all take place in the same environment. The player falls into a cave and is presented with a pathway leading to a throne, lit by 3 portals. When the player enters the first portal, they are briefly blinded by the light of the portal and the screen goes white. After immerging on the other side, they regain their vision and it is revealed to them that the path has changed and that in order to get to the next portal they must complete a challenge. This design allowed me to reuse the majority of the environment, and also made adding or reducing the total amount of levels as easy as adding or removing the total portals along the path.

Ultimately, I'm very proud of how the game turned out, even with its flaws and some incomplete assets. I poured myself into making this game. It was overwhelming towards the end, and while it probably isn't the best showing of my leadership skills at the time, that extra work I put into it is part of what makes me so proud of the final product. I gained a lot of experience with this project.  I learned about leadership, documentation, design, modeling, UI, coding, audio, lighting, sequencing, and much more. It was a well rounded experience. The challenges, stress, and sleep deprivation along the way was well worth the experience I gained and the product it resulted in.
